I've just added feedburn to my blog and explored survey monkey but I don't think they'll be much use for me. Maybe for managers wanting to keep track of website usage but not for me at my level of responsibility.

All these new types of applications and I have to work in a place that doesn't even provide USBs. The team leader is having problems getting a blog just for our team, so I can't see the organisations letting us have a facebook site (the site is banned organisational wide anyway). One day I'll get a job closer to home and that is a tad more progressive - technogically at least.

I never realised that there are free document programs out there. I suppose if you don't need them you don't look for them. It might come in handy one day.

I've come back from holidays to discover that when I was answering a few questions on Yahoo Answers, one of my answers was voted the best one. Apparently this allows me bragging rights and I'm allowed to do a little victory dance (I've already done that one - while sitting down though, don't want to make a scene in the library!). I might have to go and answer some more questions, see if I can get a taste of victory again.

I never realised that when I used sites such as whereis.com.au and I looked at the maps and sometimes changed to view, that these were called mashups. I love the calendar maker on 'big huge lab'. This is what I've created.

Those answer boards are great. I've answered one question already. It's good to get tougher questions and test my research skills.
As for podcasts, I can't do that here at work. No sound. No USB ports (even for the public). Hopeless.

Library Thing

I've already used Library thing before. But instead of using it to document what books I have at home, I use it to list books that I've read or heard about and want to read in the future. That way if I'm out and have access to the internet I can check what titles I want (saves me carrying around a tatty piece of paper) http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php I don't know if this link will work. Looks pretty generic to me.

I can't believe the stuff that is out there on Google video (work doesn't allow you tube). From watching someone bungee jumping or flying an aeroplane to people giving anonymous book reviews. I don't know why some of the stuff is on there - pure enjoyment and entertainment I suppose. I'm just new to this phenomenon of using the internet for more than a research tool. Oh, the possibilities.

I can't believe it. I've made a change to something on wikipedia. Nothing major - just added in the link for our library from the info already on wikipedia on the suburb where I work. Who would have thought - me who doesn't use wikipedia had made a change.

At first I couldn't really see the point of wikis. If you want to add some information to the internet about a particular subject, then create your own web page (easier said than done I'm sure). But then I saw the other wikis (I always thought it was just wikipedia) and now I kind of like the idea that other people can add their ideas and thoughts. I looked at the book lovers wiki and thought it great that people can write their own book review (but how can we tell if it's been changed). Then I had a quick browse through the Library Services wiki and liked the ideas that it gives people a forum to express their thoughts, ideas and experiences.

I can't believe that I am creating my own blog. It now as the RSS added as well as a poll. Now I just have to wait for the week 5 tutorial to become available - wiki's, that should be okay. It's week 10 that I'm worried about - mashups. Never heard of that before. Hopefully it will be straight forward like all the rest has been so far, even though I've never thought much about blogs before.

Week 4

So I'm trying to master bloglines and rss. Unless I've set it up wrong, I just find this technology a pain. It's just another thing I have to log in and check. Does anyone know if I can set it up so I can have them sent to my email address rather than having to log into bloglines?
I currently belong to a list called Library Link of the Day that's sent to my email address daily and I find some of the articles they sent useful as it keeps me up-to-date with the happenings of the library world (though it is predominately American).
The five feeds I selected are:
~ ABS blog for librarians
~ Bloglines news
~ The book design review
~ Librarybytes, and
~ Powerhouse museum - photo of the day.
But after seeing what they send, I might get rid of some and find something different.

Well, I'd better go find someone else's blog to comment on. I saw in the list a blog that may belong to someone where I work, so I'm going to go and read that and see if I can work out who it is.

I've just been looking at Technorati at trying to find something good to read. I don't like the layout. Why can't people's comments be listed underneath the original posting rather than having to click on 'Authority'? I'll have to find another site to search to compare.

Frustrated

Okay, so I'm meant to be learning about Library 2.0 but where I work, IT don't allow anything so I can't watch anything on Youtube, we have no sound. Arghhh...
But somehow I am creating my own blog.
I'm hoping to get more up to date with the technology that people are using these days. I haven't got the technology at home, so it'll be up to mum and dad's to listen and watch some stuff I think. I'm all for lifelong learning. I just finished 6 years at uni, and my mum also just finished a diploma in some kind of gardening course at TAFE so maybe it's in the blood.
Blogs in libraries. Yes. Get info out to the technological savvy customers, and let them give us feedback anonymously. I think we also need an internal one so we can vent about annoying customers, give tips on how we handled a situation, alert each other to the latest assignment the kids are coming in for etc.
